Regional “Bare-Earth” Digital Terrain Model for Costa Rica Based on NASADEM Corrected for Vegetation Bias

A large percentage of the Costa Rican territory is covered with high evergreen forests. In order to compute a 1″ Bare-Earth Digital Terrain Model (DTM) for Rica CRDTM2020, stochastic Vegetation Bias (VB) was reduced from NASADEM, Elevation (DEM) based on Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data. Several global models such as: canopy heights Global Forest Canopy Height 2019 model, year 2000 Map, and density Change model 2019, were used represent vegetation in SRTM data collection. Four analytical VB evaluated validated using bare-earth observations Laser Imaging Sensor (LVIS) surveys 1998, 2005, levelling dataset. The results show that differences between CRDTM2020 elevations LVIS2019 terms mean, median, standard deviation, median absolute difference (0.9, 0.8, 7.9 3.7 m, respectively) are smaller than any other nine DEMs.
